Nowadays, our planet is facing an increasing amount of garbage produced by citizens. This phenomenon is occurring on a global scale, but strategic measures can be implemented to address and mitigate this pressing issue.
In our modern world, a variety of plastic products are used by every individual in daily life, such as: plastic bags, bottles, and cups. The reason for this overconsumption is mainly driven by the convenience it offers. For instance, single-use plastics are widely used in many supermarkets due to their low cost and handiness. While it has been acknowledged that non-biodegradable products do not decompose into soil easily and it lasts for several centuries, individuals continue to use them habitually without considering the long-term environmental consequences. Furthermore, the impact comes not only from individuals but also from business and industrial zones. Many manufacturing facilities rely on plastic packaging and single-use containers to minimize production costs.
To tackle this problem, a combination of government and public participation is essential. To begin, the government should introduce strict laws or heavy taxes on single-use plastic packaging, thereby encouraging citizens and manufacturers to transit to eco-friendly products. Recently, CNN reported that some manufactures are producing materials such as: cups form banana leaves and coconut shells. On an individual level, public awareness campaigns should be increased to promote the “3R” (Reduce, Recycle. Reuse). Educational campaigns can inspire consumers to mitigate plastic usage, and adopt reusable items.
In conclusion, plastic waste and rubbish are clearly a pressing issue for our planet today. It is not only the government’s responsibility but also every individual should be responsible for our future.
