In today’s world, owning a university degree is becoming less popular, as youngsters now opt for apprenticeships. While there are both advantages and disadvantages associated with this topic, the positive aspects take precedence over the drawbacks.
A university degree accords an individual the ability to earn more wages. Many big organizations have huge financial capacity and usually demand a university certificate as a basic requirement for employment. For instance, to become a software engineer, which comes with a lucrative salary, an individual has to go to a university to earn a degree. Also, going through the university creates a platform for career growth. Advance in most careers by getting a doctorate or becoming a professor requires a university degree. A good example is the medical school certificate, which is a basic requisite for becoming a neurosurgeon.
Despite these advantages of going through the university, I believe that the apprenticeship route is a better path for a youngster. The reason is that it makes it possible for an Individual to earn money while in training. Most organizations that offer work-based training pay remuneration to their trainees, which are use to sort out their basic needs. This is beneficial as it can reduce poverty levels among youngsters. Furthermore, valuable work experience obtained from work-based training which can help a person establish his own company immediately after his training. Unlike a university degree, work-based training is more practical and fully involves trainees in the ins and outs of the business. Hence, making them ready to be self-reliant. For instance, in Nigeria
the Igbo tribe practices this work-based training and this has led to them having the largest number of young entrepreneurs in Nigeria.
Although there are a lot of advantages to going through the university, I believe that work-based training is more beneficial as it enables an individual to get paid while in training and enables them become entrepreneurs faster.
