Tours that are being organized to remote regions and communities are highly popular lately. In my view, this opportunity will bring positive impacts on both local people and the local environment, such as creating a new source of income for the local dwellers and minimizing the chances of deforestation.
Remote area tourism can be a new opportunity for the local habitants to build a source of new income. Throughout the years, people that live in remote areas receive their income by utilizing natural sources. With the existence of organized tourism that targets their area, local habitants will get various new ways of earning money without having to destroy the environment. For instance, about half of the Lombok’s population are gaining new income from many services they offer, such as establishing properties to be rented on the vacation season, selling surfing tools to foreigners, and many more.
Other impacts may happen from the aspect of the environment, especially in decreasing the deforestation activity. When the local dwellers are starting to get money from new ways, the natural resource, such as the forest, will not be dependable again as their main income. An example can be seen in the Borneo area, where a half of its rainforest are starting to grow again in recent periods due to the local dwellers who are switching their job from carpenters to tour guides.
Thus, organized tours that visit remote areas and communities is a good development that must be done. Is something that will benefit both the people and their environment, especially as an opportunity to gain new income sources and reduce deforestation activities.
