The use of online apps for language translation has been increasing remarkably these years. Although these tools offer undeniable merits, my opinion is that their disadvantages, particularly regarding language learning, dependency, and context loss surpass the associated benefits.
First of all, the major benefit of this trend is that it is not only convenient but also time-saving. These apps make communication across languages easier and more accessible, breaking down barriers in travel, business, and education. Moreover, they provide instant translations to address quick tasks such as understanding foreign documents or communicating with people who speak different languages. Therefore, using these tools helps with work, study, and travel abroad despite spending little time and effort.
However, opponents of this trend argue that it can lead to a decline in learning a new language or developing skills in cross-cultural communication. Since over-reliance on translation platforms could develop into a habit that is ingrained in the mind, people might use these tools unconsciously even when they understand or know a language. Subsequently, humans would think less as they could use apps, which could not develop their brain, language learning, and communication skills. In addition, another drawback of these online tools is inaccuracy and context loss. Apps often fail to capture nuances, cultural context, or complex grammar, leading to errors or misinterpretations. For example, there are many slang words or Gen Z terms that are yet to be translated properly and are being used commonly in daily life. As a result, a person who doesn’t understand those words even when they have been converted could be confused and misunderstand.
To conclude, even though online translation platforms improve cross-cultural communication and also save time, I believe that their demerits such as dependency and misinterpretations need to be considered more. Hence, it is recommended that instead of overusing these tools, studying new languages is a better solution.
