Band 7+: People living in the 21st century have a better life quality than people who lived in previous times. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some share the view that people in our modern society have a better quality of life than those who lived in the past. Although the quality of life is still poor in some regards, I believe it is generally far better than it was many years ago.

To commence, I consider that the quality of life most people enjoy at present is superior to that of the past in two principal ways. One major way life has improved is through higher income levels. More and more people have access to jobs in various industries ranging from education to manufacturing, where they can earn a reasonable and stable income. This phenomenon has meant most people live above the poverty line, can make and save money, and afford a good life for themselves and their families.

Improved medical care and easy access to it are another telltale sign of better-quality life. Unlike in the past, when medicine was poorly established and only the affluent few could afford it, today it has become an accessible commodity even to those living in far-off villages, who can make use of it to a satisfactory extent. Complex surgeries can be performed to give cancer patients a new lease of life, while outreach programs are available to those residing in remote places. These developments have substantially contributed to our quality of life.

It is, however, also essential to acknowledge that the quality of life has deteriorated in some respects. More precisely, the growing presence of technology in our lives has led to a series of physical, mental, and emotional woes. For instance, more and more people these days suffer from poor posture, depression, and alienation, primarily as a result of screen addiction and social media. Due to these issues, their overall well-being is greatly diminished, and it can arguably be said that their lives pale in comparison to those of people in the past who enjoyed more time outdoors, had deeper social connections, and felt a stronger sense of community.

In conclusion, while the quality of life today seems compromised in some ways, I believe it is largely better because of a boost in personal income and better healthcare.
