It is said that high school students should not learn literature such as novels and poems because of its time-consuming. I totally disagree with this statement for many reasons.
First of all, studying literature is the way to understand a nation’s culture. The substances in novels, poems or literary works reflect the culture, from that students can explore the customs, traditions, etc. of a country. Therefore, fostering empathy and breaking down stereotypes. In addition, each literary work reflects historical time so students can learn about history through literature. For example, one of the literary works in grade 12 literature textbook is “Vo nhat” by Kim Lan, represented a scary starve in 1945. By the history in those literary works, people can have a glimpse into the past and understand what humanity experienced.
Another reason is that having knowledgeable about literature helps people build analytical skills. Through the stories, students understand implicit meanings, characters’ motivations, or underlying message by text analysis skills. As a result, they can apply these skills to real life and have logical arguments. Additionally, learning literature is also improve communicate skills. Students spend time on different literaries can have a wide range of vocabularies, from that they know to articulate ideas clearly, which is critical in written and verbal communication. For example, in an interview for a job, a good person in communication can have more opportunities than others.
In conclusion, learning literature such as novels and poems should not be a waste of time for high-school students while it provides cultural and historical understanding, and builds skills in analysis and communication.
