Since some practical subjects are more essential to focus on, some people deem it is useless to study literature in high school education. However, I believe that we should not undermine its value, owing to their certain contributions to students in the period of high school.
First and foremost, literature is the fundamental subject to strengthen youngster’s morality without facing the realistic situation. By reading or analyzing the underlying purposes of novels or poems, students can learn new lessons from them to mould their characteristics, having the ability to identify what is good or bad. For instance, literature is useful for adolescence, which is the period students tend to have teenagerism, in turn leading to the curiosity of trying new things. Although making bad decisions before being well-educated can be a way of experiencing, lack of ability to read the dangerous situation can result in tragic consequences. In fact, literature education will strengthen this social-based skill by enhancing their sensory experience if they are already exposed to those situations in a story.
Furthermore, some literary works can be associated with historic events in the past, allowing students to have a deeper outlook in the other aspects of history. While history provided them with formal knowledge such as the date, the figure, and how civilians survived, some ancient novels and poems raised their voice and expressed feelings about other sides like family, love story, solidarity at that severe time. These can be the humantarian value that students should study to respect the today peace and be motivated to dedicate our nation with achievement and patriotism.
In conclusion, learning literary works is undoubtedly useful for high school learners, which enhances their moral awareness, social skills and the sense of patriotism in the modern society so that it can create a well-rounded future generation.
