Some individuals believe that high school students should focus more on other subjects such as Maths, Physics or Biology, except literature. Personally, I strongly disagree with this opinion.
The fundamental reason why it is imperative that students continue learning literature is that they can improve their language and communication skills. In fact, most of poems or folk tales possess a myriad of diversified grammars ranging from metaphors to metonymies and advanced vocabularies. These significant literary materials are essential factors to assist students to expand their vocabulary in writing and stimulate their artistic intelligent. Also, thanks to noticeable values of literature, learners would have chances to increase their ability to express themselves in verbal communication by picking up slang from a novel to use in real life. It is particularly important in morden days when numerous negative impacts of social networks and virtual communications have been spreading in over the world.
The other factor driving to the importance of literature is that students can learn a lot about Vietnamese culture and history. This is mainly because novels or poems reflect people’s lives in a certain regions during a certain period in history. For instance, by means of understanding Chi Pheo, a famous short story in Vietnam, readers can have a good grasp of harsh history background in 1945 and imagine what philosophy the villagers were practicing and what they did for a living. Therefore, literary works play an indespensible role in maintaning and protecting valuable cultural and historical elements of each nation.
In conclusion, there are multiple reasons why literature should be a big part of the curriculum. I strongly disagree with the opinion that learning literature is a waste of time.
