In recent years, consuming local food has become a much-discussed topic. While some argue that people should only purchase food from the local sources, others disagree, and I intend to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this issue in the following paragraphs.
On one hand, some people claim that residents should only buy food produced in their area. This is due to the fact that consuming fresh food is one of the most important factors to guarantee a healthy society. For example, individuals who eat natural and fresh food without added preservatives tend to live much healthier lives. Furthermore, shopping from the local farmers helps improve the domestic economy. Thus, in their perspective, buying from local sources is highly beneficial.
On the other hand, there are many who maintain that avoiding non-local food is not a practical idea. This is because the geographical conditions vary from one country to another, making it impossible to produce all kinds of food everywhere. For instance, only the port cities can have fish industry, so consumers who are not living by the sea have to buy fish from neighboring regions. Moreover, local suppliers are not able to supply sufficient output to the increasing demand for food. Hence, this group find importing inevitable.
What can be concluded is that although it is important to consume fresh and organic food, but in response to the market demand and necessity of eating all kinds of nutrition, the importance of importing foreign products cannot be avoided.
