Band 8+: People who read for pleasure in their free time have a better imagination than those who prefer to watch TV. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some believe that people who prefer reading books in their free time have a better imagination than those who watch TV. I fully agree with this statement, as individuals who choose books tend to rely on their imagination more actively.

One reason for this is that reading allows people to create images in their minds. This process introduces a variety of possibilities, which helps expand creative capacity. Constantly engaging with text requires active participation from readers, who must visualize characters and plotlines. Different genres of books can influence our imaginative thought, often encouraging speculation, analysis, and emotional engagement – all of which nurture a richer imagination.

In contrast, watching TV presents us with pre-packaged images, limiting our ability to think creatively. TV programs are often designed to relax the viewer’s mind, which is contrary to the experience of reading. While it may entertain by providing laughter and helping to alleviate daily stress, it tends to leave the mind passive and empty. While entertaining, television lacks positive contributions to our imagination. Moreover, recent research has shown that TV shows can lead to strong addiction, which ultimately blocks creativity, turning viewers into ‘robots.’

In conclusion, while some may choose to watch TV for their leisure, I strongly believe that reading books is a better way to enhance one’s imagination.
