Amid the rapid development of business nowadays, some state that age is the most powerful determinant of individuals’ shopping habits. From my perspective, while I agree that age is a crucial factor, other aspects such as income level and geographical location are equally decisive.
The primary reason that convinces people that age decides the shopping habits is the unique generation-specific trend of fashion. To elaborate, because of the difference caused by age, such as life experience, the taste of fashion differs largely in terms of age. For instance, some young adults would prefer clothing with vibrant color and unconventional design, whereas the middle-aged would dress in a more plain and formal style. In addition, different age groups also have their own needs. For example, while the younger generation chooses outfits to express themselves, the more grown-ups primarily consider the practical aspects, such as the level of comfort and durability.
On the other hand, age is not the sole determinant of purchasing habits. Other factors, especially the income level, also strongly influence people’s choices. Specifically, the higher income groups would favor the external values behind a good because they have more purchasing ability than others. To cite an instance, the rich are more likely to prefer organic milk as a result of the eco-friendly franchising related to organic milk, whereas the households with a modest income would choose the regular ones because of their cheaper price. Apart from income level, the geographical location also contributes to decisions on purchasing habits. To be specific, the trend of fashion varies vastly between nations, and therefore affects people’s choice of goods.
In conclusion, while I agree that age plays an important role in deciding purchasing preferences, it is not the sole most powerful one.
