Band 6+: Traffic congestion and air pollution are becoming serious problems in major cities. What are the causes of these problems, and what solutions can governments implement?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is an ongoing debate regarding the problems imposed by traffic, as it is considered that traffic congestion has become a serious issue in a number of urban areas across the world. It is now badly affecting people’s daily routines, the economy, and the environment. There are several factors behind this issue and it is a need of the hour that governments and people should take some practical steps to resolve this problem.

People are migrating to cities from their villages because of lack of opportunities of education and business in their native areas. Proper healthcare facilities lack in their respective regions. As a result, they are moving to urban areas. Buildings are being constructed in cities without any prior legislation. The production of vehicles has increased in this decade due to introduction of modern technology. Individuals prefer to use their personal cars instead of using a public bus. All of these factors including overpopulation, uncontrolled construction, overproduction of vehicles, and irresponsible attitude from citizens, are responsible for traffic congestion in major urban areas across the world.

In order to reduce traffic on the roads, governments should take some specific decisions. They should provide the facilities of education, business, and healthcare to the people living in villages so that their migration to big cities can be managed. There should be designing and implementation of laws in order to manage the construction of properties in these urban areas. There should be some limitations in the production of vehicles. Furthermore, it is a great responsibility of citizens to use public transport to carry out their daily activities. The combined action of governments and citizens can resolve traffic congestion.

In conclusion, it is stated that factors such as increased population, illegal construction, uncontrolled production of vehicles, and irresponsible behaviours of citizens are responsible for uncontrolled traffic. The management of these underlying causes by both governments and individuals can resolve this issue efficiently.
