It is a widely acknowledged fact that numerous major international events, such as the Olympic Games, the FIFA World Cup, and other global tournaments, play a critical role in fostering positive relations between countries. Undoubtedly, they help mitigate global tensions and misunderstandings, while also providing a safe outlet for expressions of national pride. I fully support this view, and in this essay, my opinion will be carefully substantiated.
To begin with, the diplomatic function of sports has been recognized since ancient times. Ideally, sports should bring people together and aid in solving international challenges. According to a United Nations resolution, sport is intended to promote peace and unite humanity. This concept of sports diplomacy is considered a form of soft power and a key aspect of international relations. Despite the competitive nature of economics, politics, and other areas, athletic events represent the most peaceful form of rivalry, without the need for economic sanctions or political maneuvers.
Nevertheless, sports do not always guarantee a safe channel for nationalistic emotions. Many spectators, particularly football fans, often become aggressive, sometimes attacking not only rival supporters but even players from the opposing teams. They can be loud, engage in excessive drinking, and damage public property. A striking example is the infamous football war between Honduras and El Salvador, which occurred following a match loss and escalated into a tragic conflict. This brief four-day war led to civilian casualties estimated at around 6,000 people.
In conclusion, while international sports events can occasionally give rise to extreme nationalism and unfortunate conflicts, they predominantly serve as powerful platforms for promoting harmony, understanding, and cooperation among nations. By offering a peaceful means for countries to demonstrate their pride and strength, events like the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup encourage unity in diversity and facilitate cross-cultural exchange. Despite isolated incidents of violence, the unifying spirit of these gatherings outweighs the risks, highlighting the immense potential of sports diplomacy in bridging global divides and fostering a more peaceful world.
