International sporting events such as FIFA World Cup and Olympics are global events that receive significant national support and generate high expectations. As an enthusiast of these tournaments, I agree with the notion that sporting events can play a role in fostering international harmony and national unity. Although this is only true to a certain extent, as these events can also have unintended consequences on the diplomatic relations between nations.
To begin with, the World Cup, Olympics, and other international games contribute to easing tensions among diverse nations. A prime example of this is the regular football matches between South and North Korea that provide an opportunity for both nations to develop a deeper understanding of each other. In the mid-1990s, when hundreds of North Korean supporters accompanied their football team to South Korea, displaying tremendous enthusiasm during the sporting events. Despite seeming surprising, many South Koreans were taken aback by the sight of North Korean cheering and crying during the match. It became apparent that they shared a common passion for sports. Through sports, these two historically divided nations managed to transcend their political and ideological differences, and managed to alleviate their tensions and foster a sense of patriotic unity.
On the contrary, certain sporting competitions have the potential to exacerbate international tensions. For instance, matches between Korea and Japan in sports like football and baseball are significant affairs and escalate tensions between the two countries. Post-match blame games and patriotic emotions, particularly after a defeat, reach a boiling point which can further strain relations between the nations. In some cases, the negative aftermath of loosing matches can directly impact the mental well-being of the players as well.
In summary, while international sporting events can serve as an effective tool for easing tensions or channeling patriotism in a constructive manner. However, I believe that games should not be viewed as the primary means for fostering patriotism or achieving long-term peaceful international relations.
