Band 8+: Several languages are in danger of extinction because they are spoken by very small numbers of people. Some people say that governments should spend public money on saving these languages, while others believe that would be a waste of money. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Several languages are at risk of becoming extinct due to their limited number of speakers. There is a debate regarding whether governments should allocate funds to preserve these languages or consider it a futile expenditure. This essay will explore both perspectives and provide a personal opinion on the matter.

On the one hand, proponents argue that it is imperative for governments to invest in the preservation of endangered languages. One significant advantage of this approach is that it showcases government tolerance and respect for cultural diversity. For instance, allocating financial resources to safeguard dying languages fosters an understanding of their intrinsic value and their contribution to cultural richness. Moreover, the preservation of languages offers cognitive benefits. Learning and maintaining multiple languages can enhance individuals’ cognitive abilities and contribute to mental acuity. Additionally, acquiring knowledge of new languages can also lead to a deeper understanding and appreciation of one’s native language. Thus, supporting endangered languages can have far-reaching positive effects.

On the other hand, opponents believe that directing substantial funds towards the preservation of dying languages is impractical. They argue that governments have limited budgets and should prioritize essential needs such as healthcare and education over language preservation. For example, investing in healthcare and education may have a more direct and significant impact on the overall well-being of the population. Furthermore, the prevalence of dominant global languages, such as English or Chinese, as means of communication renders the preservation of all dwindling languages seemingly futile and inefficient. Therefore, they argue that such preservation efforts may not be the most productive use of financial resources.

In conclusion, while some individuals may view the preservation of endangered languages as a worthwhile endeavor, others argue that it may not be the most effective use of government funds. However, considering the cultural and cognitive advantages of preserving languages, it is my belief that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. In an increasingly globalized world, safeguarding linguistic diversity holds significance in preserving our collective human heritage and promoting cross-cultural understanding. Therefore, in my opinion, governments should allocate some resources to support the preservation of endangered languages, albeit in a balanced manner that considers other pressing societal needs.
