Band 7+: Should teachers be able to discipline students physically if they misbehave?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, more and more students at school don’t follow school rules and act appropriately. This is why it becomes harder for tutors and teachers to find a way to control and discipline them. Many people say that teacher should be capable of controlling students by giving them physical punishment if they misbehave. I totally disagree with this opinion and and support my view with examples.

First of all, corporal punishment may scare and frighten many students. Students will not concentrate on studying and learning different subjects at school, but on how to satisfy teachers’ standards to be safe from their physical abuse. During class, students’ participation and attention will be passive, and no one will be willing to solve or answer the question voluntarily. This substantially will reduce pupil’s interest in subjects and trust in their teacher.

Second reason is that it may exacerbate the situation. Hitting students and using physical strentgh might affect students to act even in worse ways,. For example, students might actually fight back and oppose teachers, which will bring even more and bigger problems. In the result, students exposed to this type of teaching and disciplining will be more aggressive and antisocial in their future career.

Turning to the other side, many people hold the view that teachers are children’s parents. What I mean by this is that teachers’ intentions are not to hit or harm students, but to warn them. This is because, many children act upon their feelings and emotions, not understanding the consequences and true nature of their actions. For example, parents hit or give a slight slap, to make a warning to their kids about the dangers and consequences.

In conclusion, although being able to hit or slap students can be a great way to warn students about the dangers, I believe it has a high possibility to negative outcomes such as frightening students and making the situation even worse. That’s why, I think it would be better to not use the corporal punishment teaching and find another way of solving the problem.
