Some people believe small and independent stores will no longer exist and survive in the course of time. I strongly agree with this view because the rapid development of large supermarkets and online shopping has made it harder for small shops to compete and stay in business.
To be honest, large supermarkets are probably the biggest reason small shops are having such a hard time these days. Because they have so much money they can just sell stuff way cheaper than any small store ever could. And not just that, people can literally get everything they need in one trip which is something small shops just cannot offer. Like someone living in Jakarta can just go to Hypermart once and already done, groceries clothes electronics everything is there. Small neighborhood shops lose their regular customers because of this and some of them end up just closing down. It really is difficult for small shops to compete when supermarkets make everything so much easier for buyers.
Online shopping also makes things even worse for small independent shops trying to stay open. People nowadays would rather just grab their phone and order something than actually go outside to buy it. Plus apps like Shopee or Tokopedia always have big discounts and free shipping which small shops can never really compete with. For example a small local clothing store will obviously lose customers to an online seller who sells the same thing but cheaper and delivered to your door. This kind of situation slowly kills the income of small business owners until some of them just give up. In the end online shopping is just another reason why small shops are finding it harder and harder to survive.
In conclusion, between the rise of big supermarkets and how easy online shopping has become, small independent shops are really struggling to keep up. If nothing changes, it is very likely that they will slowly disappear from the future.
