In contemporary society, youth unemployment has become a grave concern demanding immediate consideration. Nowadays, there are no job opportunities for the young generation despite completing their education. The major causes of the youth unemployment are overpopulation and corruption. The issue of youth unemployment leads to an increase in crime rates and suicides in the society. In my opinion, implementing government policies to assist the younger generation and increasing access to loans could be used as solutions to overcome youth unemployment. Let us discuss the reasons and consequences of youth unemployment followed up by my own recommendations as remedies for solving the same.
To begin, let us shed light on the causes of youth unemployment. First and foremost, the primary reason for youth unemployment is overpopulation. To elaborate, with the increasing number of youngsters entering the job market, competition for acquiring jobs is also becoming intense. The heightened competition level not only presents challenges for the youth seeking employment opportunities but also for the job markets accommodating the jobs as well. This crowded population of youngsters makes it difficult to find suitable job positions for the deserving individuals. In addition, corruption is the other major factor causing youth unemployment. To elucidate, with the growing number of population, there is an increase in the rate of corruption in the hiring process of the job. Those individuals having some of the family or friendly connections with the hiring departments reserve their positions for so and some of them bribes the officers in the form of money or some presents. This process leads to nepotism, favoritism and bribery, which inturn results in less deserving candidate being accommodated over the more qualified and deserving ones, further leading to youth unemployment. To illustrate, an article published in The Washington Post in July 2013, by its editor Benjamin Bradlee on “Youth unemployment” stated that corruption was the prominent reason for youth unemployment and had a drastic impact on younger generation.
On the contrary, there are many effects of youth unemployment. Primarily, the potential increase in the rate of crime is the main effect of youth unemployment in the society. To explicate, as with the growing number of population, the need for the basic living is also increasing significantly. There is no job opportunities for the younger generation to meet their daily living requirements and for their future as well. In meet their day-to-day needs, young people engage in petty thefts, pickpoketing, pilfering and burglary, which leads them to delve into criminal activities. To continue, the unemployment of youth also leads to the suicidal activities of young people. To explain, as there are fewer job opportunities among youngsters and intense competition growing in their fields, they find it challenging to acquire the targeted jobs. This makes people of today’s generation more anxious, hopeless, and furious about their future achievements and plans. This results in mental issue among them, such as stress and depression, which inturns increases the risk of suicidal thoughts and actions. To illustrate, a survey conducted by International Labour Organization, in April 2016, in the U.S.A. on 1200 youngsters aged 18 to 30 years revealed that about 7% of the suicidal deaths in the U.S.A. is because of youth unemployment as youngsters went into depression for not acquiring the job positions.
Furthermore, there are some solutions to overcome youth unemployment. First of all, government should implement some policies in order to maximize the employment opportunities for youngsters. To explicate, governments should invest in training and practical programmes which will help modern generation people to find employment opportunities. Government should collaborate with N.G.O’s, Health Care sectors to raise awareness and promote youth employment and small business initiatives. This will facilitate young people to minimize unemployment. Moreover, there should be an increasing access to loans for young generation. To substantiate, if the government allows the youngsters to access the loan easily, they may be able to open and run the business that will help them to meet their daily basic living needs and requirements. For instance, a research conducted by Oxford University of U.K., in May 2019, in U.K. on 2000 people aged 18-35 years revealed that nearly 35% of the youngsters successfully opened their small scale business with the increasing access to loan.
To encapsulate, it can be concluded that overpopulation and corruption are two significant reasons of youth unemployment. It has major effects on the society as well such as an increase in crime rate and suicidal activities. In my opinion, this problem can be cured by implementing government policies and easy loan access to young people which helps them in establishing their business by themselves. I believe, with the little mindfulness and careful scrutiny, menace can be won over.
