Humans have lived on the planet for untold millennia and only recently have we come to understand the importance of safeguarding the environment and natural habitats. Some believe that one way we can do this is by implementing restrictions on international travel thereby decreasing carbon emissions, while others believe that the pros of travelling abroad outweigh the cons. I am of the opinion that if done in moderation and regarding certain organisations, then I agree that it should be restricted.
There are, without a shadow of a doubt, many advantages to international. Networking, visiting family, connecting cultures and sharing food, information and technologies to name a few. Some countries’, e.g. Fiji, only source of income are from tourists, and cutting the number of potential tourists would all but cripple their economies. However if we are not mindful of the amount of harmful pollutants we are releasing into the environment then there wont be a habitable planet to live on anymore.
To clarify my position, I do agree that international travel needs to be restricted but only in moderation. There are countless flights that are virtually empty with the exception of a few rare passengers. Aircrafts that are smaller and consume less fuel would be much better suited to these types of flights rather than using massive double decker planes that use infinitely more fuel comparatively. Doing this would cut carbon emissions tremendously.
To conclude, I agree that international travel should be restricted to cut carbon emissions, but only regarding empty flights with few passengers.
