Some people say that schools should teach the students soft skills such as teamwork and problem-solving skills rather than the traditional academics. I partially agree with this argument, and will articulate why they should combine life skills and traditional curriculum.
Teaching the students practical skills will equip them with the abilities to solve real-world problems and prepare for the workplace. The students with life skills such as teamwork, collaboration, and problem-solving will exactly know how to solve certain problems, collaborating with peers or colledges. For instance, when the children are tasked to complete a group project, they who learn about interpersonal skills will know how to divide, allocate the tasks, and resolve the conflicts, implementing the projects easily and effectively. Moreover, they are more likely to be employed in work sectors. Therefore, life skills are essential in the students’ lives.
On the other hand, traditional academics will allow the learners to be familier with academic subjects, and to specialise in certain career. People who acknowledge about science, maths, and history will have a chance to boost their critical thinking and analytical skills. For instance, teaching biology in school allows the students to get insight into their own body’s structure and functions. On top of that, almost the jobs require the knowledge in traditional academics.
To conclude, life skills prepare the youngsters for real-life challenges while traditional academics support a strong foundation in core subjects. In my opinion, integrating the soft skills and traditional curriculum is indispensable for the students for a holistic development, the schools, therefore, should strike a balance between these two skills to prepare for student’s future life.
