Governments usually face a presisting issue when it comes to the funding of the public transportation sector, or building new car lanes and highways, In this problem people are extremely divided, some believe the priority should be to the public transport sector, while others think the construction of new and improved infrastructure is far more better. Personally I believe governments must invest more money on paving new roads and highways.
On the first hand, some people think the government must allocate enough money to invest in the public transportation sector, because it supports the majority of the residents and it is a proper alternative to small vehicles. To elaborate, most governments face the problem of the rapid increase in the number of small vehicles in large cities, by supporting mass public transportation methods, people would abandon their cars and used buses instead, countries like Netherland invested heavily on top notch public transport systems a few decades ago, now more than 25% of car owners have sold their cars and relied on public buses, this has resulted in a dramatic decrease in traffic levels, and a noticable enhancement in the quality of air people breathe.
On the second hand, others believe the government should focus on cities infrastructure such as building new highways, and fixing the existing roads’ networks, they believe that public transportation isn’t an ideal solution to the issues that cities face nowadays. Moreover, mass transports could not replace the essential role mobile vehicles are doing, these buses and other methods do not offer the level of comfort and practicality private cars provide to people. Furthermore, they claim in order to create a viable public transportation network governments are obligated to ensure every resident is able to find a station nearby, regardless of where or how far is he, which means the amount of funding required to accomplish this mission is far more greater than building new roads or highways.
To conclude, mass transportation is a decent way to ensure every person has a chance to roam around the city, and governments must take the intiative in providing the budget needed to build the necessary facilities for public transport. However, I believe that the investment in new roads and highways serve larger proportion of the public.
