As technology continues to develop, vehicles may operate without drivers. While this trend has several advantages, it also brings with it a number of significant drawbacks. In my opinion, the disadvantages of this development far outweigh the advantages.
One major advantage of this trend is that driverless vehicles can reduce the number of road accidents caused by human error. Sometimes, people become tired of driving, break a rule by using a phone, and drive carelessly. This allows people to be safer during travelling since this development uses sensors and advanced software to detect road conditions. For example, an autonomous vehicle would not be distracted by using a mobile or fall asleep while driving. The fewer human mistakes there are on the road, the fewer accidents are likely to happen. An additional advantage is better traffic management. Autonomous vehicles could communicate with one other and use real-time congestion data to choose the most efficient routes to prevent traffic jams. For instance, if congestion occurred in a particular road, smart vehicles would receive information and choose alternative routes, stopping it from becoming even worse.
Despite the positives mentioned above, there are also several significant downsides to this tendency. The biggest disadvantage of this is the risk of technical failures that can even lead to potentially large-scale accidents. Self-driving cars depend on automated technology (sensors, advanced software, communication systems), so a single technical problem could cause a collision. A further drawback is cybersecurity threats. A driverless vehicle relies heavily on computerized system , so cyberattacks could potentially interfere with its operation. Hackers could gain unauthorized access to a vehicle’s computer system. As a result, passengers’ safety and personal data could be threatened.
To sum up, although there are clear advantages, such as fewer road accidents and better traffic management, the drawbacks of this trend, namely technical failures and cybersecurity threats, overshadow these upsides.
