In today’s fast-paced world, the rapid development of technology has made it increasingly common to see children as young as eight holding smartphones. Nearly every child now owns a cell phone, and they spend a significant amount of time on these devices. From my perspective, this is a troubling trend, and this essay will discuss the reasons behind this phenomenon and its disadvantages.

Smart devices have become increasingly appealing to users, particularly young people, due to their wide range of features. With countless entertaining games and social media applications available, smartphones have transformed into a primary source of leisure for many children. Kids become so engrossed in engaging videos or shows that some toddlers refuse to eat unless they are allowed to watch YouTube while doing so. As they grow older, they start to connect with peers through messaging, making it a daily routine to spend hours chatting with friends. All these factors contribute to the rise in smartphone usage among young individuals.

One major consequence of this trend is that children are developing addictions to their smart devices. The entertainment offered by these devices captivates their minds, leading them to constantly crave more engagement. Those apps release brain chemicals associated with feelings of happiness, making it difficult to turn off the phone while in the middle of an entertaining video. Some children even carry their smartphones with them while performing tasks like walking or studying, which significantly impacts their productivity and can present potential dangers in certain situations.

Another drawback of this phenomenon is the adverse effect on children’s communication skills. For example, during social gatherings, many young people tend to speak less and spend the majority of their time scrolling through their smartphones. Additionally, nowadays, children prefer staying home to play games instead of going outside to engage in sports, as children did about a decade ago. Moreover, their use of unconventional slang has replaced standard language, further contributing to a decline in their speaking abilities. Studies have shown a noticeable decrease in children’s capacity to communicate effectively.

In conclusion, factors such as the allure of entertainment and the desire to maintain peer connections are driving this phenomenon among children. As a result, more children are becoming addicted to smart technology, which significantly inhibits their communication skills. It is crucial for parents and schools to take action to encourage children to be more social and active in real life.
