Band 8+: Some children spend hours every day on their smartphones. Why is this the case? Do you think this is a positive or a negative development? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Smartphones have already caused children to spend too much time on them. I believe this issue is compounded by the lack of entertainment options, and parents’ failure to recognize the harmful effects of overuse of these digital devices. Additionally, I think this is a negative trend for children.

One key reason is the insufficient means of recreation for children, meaning smartphones often become their primary source of entertainment. Schoolchildren are naturally curious and keen to explore new things around them. However, if parents fail to provide alternative activities, such as building blocks or swimming, and merely give their children smartphones, it will lead them to focus on these devices. This phenomenon is particularly evident in many rural areas of China, where entertainment resources are even scarcer.

Another significant factor is that many parents underestimate the harm caused by prolonged use of smartphones. It is common to see children glued to screens, watching videos or playing games, in public places like restaurants or shopping malls, while their caregivers sit nearby without imposing any restrictions. Over time, this unrestricted screen time fosters dependency and unhealthy habits.

With the influence of these two factors, spending too much time on smartphones can have negative effects on young children. First, it limits children’s social development, as real-world interactions with peers are essential for improving communication skills. Unlike face-to-face engagement, smartphones cannot provide the physical and emotional connections needed for growth. Moreover, prolonged screen time can harm children’s eyesight and concentration. For instance, short videos on social media often last only 20 seconds, Excessive exposure to these videos can make it difficult for children to adapt to longer formats like movies, ultimately affecting their ability to focus and making it harder for them to concentrate on tasks. These issues show how overuse of smartphones can hurt children’s development.

In conclusion, the lack of diverse entertainment options and parents’ awareness have caused many children to spend excessive time on smartphones. Together, these factors harm their overall well-being, affecting their physical health, social skills, and concentration abilities.
