Band 6+: Some companies now allow employees to set their own working hours, as long as they complete their tasks. Why might this policy be popular? Is it a practical approach for all types of jobs?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays, many industries have started allowing their workers to set their working hours according to their own preferences. This approach might be famous for several reasons but it is not suitable for all types of jobs. This essay will discuss the advantages of this trend and will throw a light on its limitations.

On one hand, flexible working hours help maintain a work-life balance. To elaborate, people can adjust their work-schedule according to their needs regarding various routine tasks such as child-care, commuting, and appointments. This in turn allow them to work efficiently without stress which ultimately help to live a happy life. Thus, it is benefitial for overall physical, mental and social well-being. Additionally, adjustable working hours can also improve financial status in some cases especially in families where women can not do a job due to fixed schedule at workplace. Hence, in such families both husband and wife are able to earn if they are given freedom to choose their working hours which increases their gross income and they can have a better quality of life. Thus, having job-schedule according to personal preference provide social and financial benefits.

On the other hand, adjustable work-timings are not advisable to allow in all types of jobs as it may create difficulty for some people in many situations because there are many jobs which need to follow a fixed work schedule. For instance, healthcare and customer service. A hospital may not allow healthcare professionals to reach hospital at their own time because emergency cases can arrive anytime and they need to be treated on urgent basis. Therefore, if doctors refuse to treat such cases owing to their fixed duty-hours, it may endanger the lives of millions of people. Moreover, in professions requiring meeting and teamwork may face difficulties gathering employers if all are not available at the same time.

In conclusion, policies which allow employers to set their own working hours are helpful to give equal dedication to both family and profession and can also improve economic status but it is not suitable practically for some occupations like medical field and customer-care services. Hence, industries should implement different policies according to the requirements of different professions.
