Band 5+: Some countries achieve international sports by building specialised facilities to train top athletes, instead of providing sports facilities that everyone can use. Do you think this is positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Many countries prioritize train only top athlets in order to reach a huge success in international sports. However, some people argue that sport facilities should be available for everyone. While by providing only top athletes with sport activities countries can improve the quality of national sport teams, I believe that sport is basic need of human being and it should be accessible for everyone.

On the one hand, building specialised facilities to train only top athlets help country allocate funding more efiiciently. It is widely believed that if country stops funding sport activities for public and allocate more funding to athelts, it will improve the quality of facilities. Funding trainings of citizens sometimes can be wasting money, beacuse many people just gave up sports. However, instead authorities should focus and prioritize the talanted top athlets, who can raise the national pride in competitions. In this way, national sport teams and national athlets will have better equipments and even can afford some trainings and practices with foreign professionals or abroad. All these factors generally improve the performance of sportsmens in international competitions.

On the other hand, I believe that country should prioiritize the health of all citizens. Because healthy citizens are key to national development. Therefore, every person needs sports in order to stay healthy. If majority of population stop doing sports, it will give a rise to health problems such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Subsequetly, a high rate of health problems pose a huge strain on healthcare system. As a result, country will be forced to allocate huge funding toward healthcare. This situation can be seen in the US. In 2023 government reduced the national spending on public sport facilities and dramatically increased the cost of sport clubs. As a result rate of obesity increased by 14%, and to adress this issue government allocated 15.000.000 US dollars to healthcare.

In conclusion, providing only athlets with sport facilities is a negative development. Funding only sport athelts can be rewarding in international competitions, however, it negatively affects the general well-being of population.

Some countries achieve international sports by building specialised facilities to train top athletes, instead of providing sports facilities that everyone can use. Do you think this is positive or negative development?

In a number of countries, governments have opted to build elite training facilities reserved exclusively for top athletes, denying access to the general public. I firmly believe this is a negative development, as it squanders public resources, undermines grassroots participation, and erodes the broader social value of sport.
