Band 9: Some countries have legal ages at which people can drink. Other countries believe that not having strict laws is a better policy. Discuss both sides and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The debate surrounding the legal drinking age has persisted for many years, with some nations advocating for a regulated minimum age while others contend that the absence of strict laws regarding alcohol consumption represents a more effective policy. Both perspectives possess compelling justifications, which will be examined in this essay. Ultimately, I will expound upon my personal viewpoint on this contentious issue.

Establishing a legal drinking age is a common practice in numerous countries worldwide. Supporting this regulation are multiple scientific studies that underscore the necessity of imposing a minimum age for alcohol consumption. Researchers have discovered that human brain development continues into the twenties, with some experts suggesting that it may not fully mature until the mid-twenties. Consequently, when adolescents consume alcohol prior to the completion of this developmental process, they risk incurring significant alterations in their cognitive functions and psychological well-being. It is therefore not surprising that many nations have adopted stringent regulations concerning appropriate drinking ages.

Conversely, advocates for personal freedom contend that allowing individuals to make their own choices regarding alcohol consumption can lead to heightened awareness and responsibility. Anecdotal evidence from Brazil illustrates this point; when the government decriminalized certain drugs, there was a substantial reduction in illegal drug usage. Rather than penalizing individuals for using these substances, the government opted for a rehabilitative approach, which emphasizes support over punishment. This shift in policy underscores the argument that autonomy can promote better decision-making among individuals.

In my assessment, I find merit in both arguments. Each side presents valid points, supported by substantial scientific research. Given that many cultures recognize individuals as adults upon reaching the age of 18, I contend that individuals at this stage of life should possess the autonomy to make their own decisions regarding alcohol consumption. My assertion is predicated on the principle that if individuals are entrusted with the right to vote at 18, they should likewise be permitted to consume alcoholic beverages.

In conclusion, the issue of legal drinking age extends beyond surface-level perceptions and encompasses a complex array of factors. While both proponents and opponents of regulatory policies offer well-founded scientific evidence for their positions, the discussion is ultimately influenced by regional cultural attitudes and practices. As comprehensive global studies are conducted, more robust data could emerge, paving the way for a deeper understanding of the legal drinking age and its varied implications.
