Some high school students graduate without a better insight about how to manage their finances. While there are several reasons for this, the situation can be improved in various ways.
One of the major reasons why many high school students struggle with managing their money is that they rely on their parents for money. This is because schools mostly prioritize subjects like math, history and do not consider finances as a mandatory subject. As a result, pupils graduate schools without important skills such as budgeting and investing. Another reason is lack of real life financial experience. Since many students do not earn money themselves and they spend money irresponsibly. This is why high school graduates do not have enough practical experience on saving and spending. They, in turn, may face financial difficulties later on their life.
There are numerous solutions for improving students understanding. First and foremost, government should add financial education in their curriculum. Schools should teach students about budgeting and saving. With these subjects, students can develop money management skill, which is important in their life. Secondly, teachers and parents should encourage children to gain real life financial experiences. This is how they should give students small financial responsibilities like managing their payments and daily expenses. This, in effect, helps them to learn how to handle their money.
In conclusion, while graduating schools without a good understanding of how to handle can cause because of dependence on parents and lack of real life financial experiences, we may solve this issue by adding financial subjects like budgeting and saving in schools’ curriculum and giving children small financial responsibilities such as managing their daily expenses and their payments.
