It is evident that opinions are divided on whether students should be assigned with a large amount of homework or if they should concentrate on completing academic work during the school day. While being overwhelmed with a lot of tasks may take a toll on children’s mental well-being, I believe that it is in the best students’ interest that homework should be assigned regularly.
Those who worry about students’ mental health argue that completing a sheer volume of assignments can lead to numerous psychological issues. This is predicated on the fact that many high school students these days suffer from sleep deprivation given that they often have to stay up late to deal with the massive amount of workload. This could give rise to more mental health issued such as stress or anxiety, which may escalate into mental breakdown if sustained for a long time.
Advocates of assigning a lot of tasks say that homework might help students perform well in exams. This is because they can revise all the lessons that they learn from school, therefore allowing them to increase skills to enhance their competence. Conversely, although allowing students to complete academic work during the school day can help them to relieve stress after a gruelling day, they may become demotivated and less enthusiastic about studying.
Personally, I am inclined toward the idea that assigning a substantial amount of homework is beneficial for children’s cognitive development. The key rationale lies in its indispensable role in reinforcing and expanding the concepts taught during school hours, which help students develop a stronger understanding of the material. Through practicing, children can gain self-discipline and numerous life skills including time management skills or problem solving skills. This behaviour undoubtedly allow them to achieve lots of success in their study path This can be seen in Harvard University, where outstanding students often distinguish themselves not only through their inherent academic talents but also through their commitment to study habits
As can be seen, students are more benefically impacted by being given the large amount of homework than completing academic work during school hours. However, it’s important for teachers to be mindful of the volume and quality of homework to ensure that it supports students’ learning without causing stress and strain.
