Some people believe that parents have to control what their children watch on TV and the internet. While others think that children must be free when they are choosing. There are several countries where children are able to choose everything as they want. However, in my country it is not allowed for children to choose something based on their wishes because of their parents’ control. In my opinion, it depends on their age; if they are young, they must be controlled by their parents.
On the one hand, in this century social media has become more “dirty,” and these materials are not for children. Moreover, excessive watching of TV and the internet leads to health problems, such as deteriorated eyesight, mental problems, and impaired critical thinking. For example, in many countries, parents do not control their children’s use of phones or the time they spend watching TV, especially in the UK, France, and America. This might cause several problems with society and development. Therefore, parents have to protect their children from social media.
On the other hand, children should be free to choose in some aspects. For instance, they can be free to choose what to eat or what to buy, but not regarding social media. In other words, if parents control their children fully, they cannot enhance their personality. For that reason, in the future, children will not be able to make decisions as they wish. For example, in 2020, The Canadian Paediatric Association found that excessive TV viewing slows down early reading development among children. Therefore, parents should allow children to make decisions based on their wishes, but not in everything.
In conclusion, parents should give their children freedom to choose in some aspects because it should construct their personality and character as they want. However, parents have to protect their children from internet platforms.
