While some individuals often argue that young offenders should face the same punishment as adults, I firmly believe that their age and level of maturity should be taken into consideration. From my perspective, treating them as adult criminals could be both ineffective and counterproductive.
On the one hand, there are some people who believe that young people should receive the same punishment as matured offenders. This is mainly because punishing children as older individuals could play a vital role in avoiding future offenses. That is to say, if juvenile offenders are punished severely at an early age, they are highly likely to recall those punishments before committing another crime, such as shoplifting and murder or homicide, eventually resulting in a reduction in future offences. Therefore, penalizing young individuals might be an effective solution to reduce crimes.
On the other hand, while penalizing young offenders, it is essential to take into consideration their maturity level. In other words, since young individuals are not fully matured, they may commit crimes without thinking about the consequences. If juvenile offenders receive the same punishment as dangerous criminals, particularly for their minor crimes, this, in turn, can have an impact on their mental health, encouraging them to commit more crimes in their later life. Furthermore, prisons are often full of habitual offenders who have committed violent crimes, such as murder and stabbings. When new law breakers serve a custodial sentence with those who have committed violent offences, they are more likely to commit serious crimes after being released, due to the influences of experienced criminals. Thus, I believe it is better to send young offenders to rehabilitation systems to serve their punishment.
In conclusion, although penalizing teenagers as adult criminals may decrease the level of future crime rates, it could negatively affect their mental ability and, in turn, encourage them to perpetrate crimes.
