While some people believe that communication skills are more significant for students’ future, others think schools need to take a priority on mathematical skills. In my opinion, both skills are important for students’ careers, thus students need to enhance them both for different career aspects.
Firstly, maths is not only about numbers and calculations – it is about logical thinking. Math improves logical thinking by problem solving or graph analysis. Analytics experience is utility for future job, for instance, during analysis the information and form cause and effect relationships. These skills are essential for successful career because without them, it is impossible to do daily work tasks. Hence, schools should not pay less attention to maths skills.
However, communication or soft skills are not less important. A job is also considered a team work and communication with other people. All companies, organizations are required a cohesive team and well-established communication channels for successful business because they cannot work by one person. Business includes various functions therefore it is needed a large number of people to manage; it is like a unity organism. As a result, people cannot work on their own, consequently, there is needed a cohesive team. Hence, soft skills are also important and schools should include them in a curriculum as well.
In conclusion, each skills cover their aspects, which all essential for career and daily work. While maths skills improve analysis and logical thinking, communication skills are utility for team work and company development. That is why I think schools need to reach a balance between them and do not focus only on hard or soft skills.
