Band 6+: Some people believe that allowing children to make their own decisions on everyday matters (e.g. food, clothes, and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who can take responsibility for their own lives. Others argue that it would lead to a more selfish and less responsible society. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write at least 250 words.

Individuals have different views on whether giving permission to children in order to make decisions about their regular routine has a negative impact on the society and makes its people become selfish, or giving allowance to the children in some situations that make a major effect on their lives is pivotal. I agree that societies should assign responsibilities to the children in order to handle some circumstances that can affect their lives, but parents should oversee them.

Some people agree that giving freedom to children to choose their own decisions in their daily affairs can make them become arrogant in the future. For example, those children who always persuade their parents to cook the food that is their favourite food, or make them buy numerous dolls and video games, think that in every situation they are right. Subsequently, they will have high expectations from their society and they think the whole world should revolve around their decisions. If in some situations parents had announced their disagreement with them, they would have become more mutual and lowered their expectations.

Other individuals think that in certain circumstances it is crucial for children to make a decision on their own, otherwise it fosters their independence. For example, parents should teach them that asking for some suggestions from their friends and older people can be really effective, but finally they should choose the best way to face their problems. In this way, they will become a prosperous and knowledgeable person in the future. Because older people have more experience and their friends’ perspective is closer to their opinion, but at the end they should opt which of the strategies are helpful.

In conclusion, letting children be responsible for their own decisions that affect their lives can make them gain autonomy; however, from my point of view, they should not be allowed to decide about everything because it can make them become selfish in the future.
