Many people argue that university is one of the easiest ways to prepare themselves for the competitive labor market, whereas others suppose it is not mandatory to attend university to improve their chances of having a job. In my opinion, even though the university does facilitate your career opportunities, not everyone needs to pursue higher education. I believe that even without receiving university education, one can still successfully get hired by their favorite company.
Granted, in some circumstances, graduating from a university is what you need to be employed in a company. Many businesses require a bachelor’s degree as a prerequisite along with a CV given the fact that graduates tend to have little to no experience in the jobs they want to apply for. As a result, the only way for employers to assess their applicants is by relying on each applicant’s academic performance based on the grades of each subject on the degree. Therefore, obtaining a degree may be necessary depending on the situation.
However, in most of the cases, a bachelor’s degree is not a compulsory requirement. Many employers believe that it cannot reflect applicants’ skills and abilities relating to the jobs. If the companies just need a degree and overlook everything else when it comes to choosing their prospective employees, it can make every candidate think that a degree is a must-have and consequently take advantage of illegal means to falsify the results of their degrees. Moreover, good students do not equal good employees. Many students still argue that having many academic achievements is a ticket to their dream jobs and thus neglect to have real-world experience. This can be harmful as what they learn in universities is often theoretical knowledge and without enough practice, it can not be applied properly in the workplace. Furthermore, employers often ask their future employees to demonstrate their soft skills and job-related skills to get a comprehensive overview of what they can contribute to the companies. Therefore, it is imperative to possess practical skills instead of trying to impress recruiters by proving how intellectually capable one is.
In conclusion, while attending a university can indeed provide students with a means to get a decent job, I still think that many useful things can be learned from the outside world to help people achieve their dreams.
