Homework has been a longstanding educational practice that has sparked debates among educators, parents, and students alike. While some individuals think that children shouldn’t have homework every day, others think that it’s necessary for them to receive homework every day in order to succeed in school.
On the one hand, I agree with the viewpoint that assignments help to improve student achievement. Firstly, I believe that homework teaches students various beneficial skills that they will carry with them throughout their academic and professional lives, from time management and organization to self-motivation and autonomous learning. In this study, Duke University researchers reviewed more than 60 research studies on homework between 1987 and 2003 and concluded that homework does have a positive effect on student achievement. Secondly, I also feel that studying after school every day helps to reinforce classroom learning. In other words, students who have homework are more successful in life.
On the other hand, there are clear arguments that too much homework can negatively affect students. Research conducted by Stanford University has shown that excessive homework can lead to increased stress levels, anxiety, and even depression among students. The pressure to complete assignments on time and meet academic expectations can have a detrimental impact on students’ mental health, leading to burnout and decreased motivation to learn. Moreover, it takes away from students’ leisure time. Adolescents need spare time. It allows children to relax and explore the world that they are living in. This free time also gives them valuable skills they wouldn’t learn in a classroom, such as riding a bike, reading a book, or socializing with friends and family.
In conclusion, it seems to me that it is not as significant as commonly believed to do the homework every day.
