People’s feelings and emotional states play a major role in their lives, as these factors significantly shape their personalities. It is worth noting that some argue that controlling emotions and stress management are individuals’ strength, while there is also another group of people who think that expressing emotions openly is beneficial for both physical and psychological well-being. I strongly believe that hiding one’s negative emotions and accumulation of harmful feelings can have detrimental effects on their mental development in the long-term. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my own view with a reasonable conclusion.
On the one hand, the main reason why some folks oppose showing feelings and revealing intentions openly may be that it can provide full information about their personalities leaving no space for privacy and secrecy. To be more specific, expressing emotions openly is not always accepted equally, but rather may tell about people’s weak sides and their insecurities. For instance, a significant number of governors and rulers throughout history, did not intend to show their feelings to anyone. Instead, they would use smoke screens to disguise their emotions, as the ability to conceal one’s feelings and intentions was considered a power.
On the other hand, people saying what they feel is often a simple truth about human nature. Most people are open books, and they are prone to tell about their emotions at every opportunity. This is often explained by the fact that it is stress-relieving and natural to always want to talk about one’s feelings. When negative emotions are shared, this helps people forget worries and improve overall well-being including their mood. As a result, individuals want to be heard, understood and empathized.
In my opinion, monitoring what we reveal is difficult and may be harmful from a scientific point of view. Most diseases and poor medical conditions are the result of stress and anxiety. That is to say that deep conversations between people sharing their feelings not only aid escaping stress but also prevent some illnesses. Therefore, understanding each other and being able to share emotions and negative experiences can be highly important
In conclusion, although some people believe that suppressing emotions demonstrates strength and protects one’s privacy, I maintain that openly expressing one’s feelings is far more beneficial. Sharing emotions with supportive individuals not only alleviates stress but also contributes to better psychological and physical health. Therefore, cultivating an environment where people feel safe to express their emotions is essential for long-term well-being and healthy personal development.
