Band 8+: Some people believe that digital resources will put an end to the existence of libraries while others think that libraries exist for a cause, and technology will support libraries rather than eliminate them. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

In this age of increased digitalization, there is an ongoing debate over whether online resources will replace libraries. While both sides have their arguments, I am of the belief that the virtual world will act as an aid to the real one.

First of all, electronic resources unquestionably have a great impact on our lives, including the way we read books. Thousands of literature pieces are available online, making the purchase and reading of works easier than ever before. For instance, online bookstores, such as Amazon Books, and Internet archives exist to cater to readers’ needs in the most convenient way. Furthermore, information is accessible from almost anywhere, making research on the go more intuitive than ever before. For the first time ever, knowledge can be obtained with just a mobile phone and an Internet connection. Additionally, materials required to produce books can be reduced, potentially leading to a positive environmental development. For the reasons outlined, thinking digital resources will eventually replace bookrooms certainly does not seem outrageous.

Despite the aforementioned merits of the net, I believe that technology will aid libraries instead of putting an end to them. One reason is that there are information which only exists in print. Many centuries-old writings are currently not available online and can only be accessed in person. Moreover, books can serve as ageless records of the time period in which they were written. In the quest of learning about the origins of humans, researchers have found them a valuable asset in unveiling ancient civilizations. Most importantly, books are always available regardless of electricity or Internet connection. In case of a global network collapse, they can still provide wisdom for many generations to come. Without a doubt, libraries still have a place in this world.

To sum it up, I personally think that digital resources will not take over libraries but rather support them. Nevertheless, both are essential in humanity’s conquest of knowledge.
