It is believed that it would be better if governments have full access to people’s mobile phones, while others think that this is a violation of their privacy. If governments have access to calls and messages this can contribute to crime situations and national security. But also, this is an invasion of privacy and would decrease the trust of people in governments. In my opinion, access to phones should be only necessary for specific situations, such as crime.
If governments have full access to people’s phones, this can contribute to national security. This is because, crimes are organised by communication, and people that committed crimes use messaging apps, such as signal. Also, there are a lot of digital crimes, so to solved it, it is necessary to have access to their phones. For example, in Chile a public crime was solved by the intervention of police on peoples’ phones and the reading of the WhatsApp messages.
People’s mobile phones have a lot of private information, so if governments have full access to them, it will be an invasion of privacy. And this can lead a decrease of confidence in governments. Because how they have full information from them, they will know what they are thinking, so they can manipulate them. For example, there are some studies that analyses the impact of social media in elections, and how apps like twitter can control the discussion.
To conclude, the access of governments in mobile phones it is useful in specific situations, but they should not have full access, because is an invasion of privacy and a diminish in public perception of governments.
