It is true that with the expansion of cities, urban population is increasing at a higher proportion and governments should focus on increasing public transportation rather than constructing more roads for the vehicle population. Therefore, I strongly agree that governments should prioritise public transport rather than continuously expanding roads for private vehicle
One major reason for prioritising public transport is to reduce traffic congestion and environmental problems. As cities become more crowded, the number of private vehicles on roads increases. This often results in traffic jams, longer travel times and higher levels of air pollution. However, efficient public transport systems such as buses, trains and metros can carry large numbers of passengers at the same time. For example, a well-developed railway system can transport hundreds of passengers during peak hours without requiring hundreds of individual vehicles, and also which is quite cheaper. As a result, cities can experience less traffic congestion and less polluted environment.
Another important advantage of public transport is that it is more accessible and efficient for a growing population. Owning and maintaining a private vehicle can be expensive, making it difficult for some people to travel by themselves. Students, elderly people and low-income workers often depend on public transportation when engaging in their daily activities. For instance, students living away from their hometowns usually has to travel in public transportation because it is impossible for them to travel in personal vehicles or request rides which are expensive. They can use affordable buses or trains to reach their destination easily at a cheaper price, even though it is time consuming. Therefore, investing in public transport helps create a better society by benefiting a larger proportion of the population.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that governments should prioritise public transport over building additional roads for vehicles. Although developing roads seem necessary, public transportation is more important to reduce congestion, control air pollution and provide affordable transportation to the growing population.
