It is augured that the use of social media platforms should be regulated by authorities as to shield residents from harmful content. Although i think that limiting the usage of social media may bring certain benefits, i would say that this can have some drawbacks rather than improvement.
Admittedly, government regulation could bring some benefits for users from harmful content. Many kids nowadays already have access to social media without parental control. Therefore, this increases the chances of getting exposed or cyberbullying on social platforms, leading to depression and anxiety since adolescents are still developing both their mental and physical health. By implementing regulation, it could also reduce the spread of fake news and misinformation, which often common on social media. For instance, in China, some platforms are banned, reducing the risk of false information spreading on their network.
On the other hand, social media can also bring useful information for many users. There is no guarantee that regulating this could be an effectively and practical solution instead of that educational initiatives are needed in order to raise people awareness. Additionally, by promoting education and teaching residents, especially students, how to identify harmful content and falsely information on the internet. This approach is more sustainable and provides a longer solution.
In conclusion, even thought government regulation could provide certain benefits for users from social media, i think that proving proper education is a better way to deal with the harmful content across social media platforms. This creates not only safe environment on the internet but also a good way to deal with bad content.
