Band 7+: Some people believe that modern advertisements have more negative effects on society than positive ones. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

With the rapid development of business these days, there are different types of advertisements in our lives. Companies use a variety of advertisements to attract people’s attention. Some people argue that advertisements are a good way to improve finance in this world. Others argue that too many advertisements will make people buy unnecessary goods, in turn causing waste and hurting the environment.

Some people argue that enterprises can promote their products by putting advertisements on social media or on the road, which is an important marketing way to catch buyers’ eyes. Furthermore, advertisements can enhance people’s consumption willingness as well as boost the financial aspect in the area. For instance, when people want to buy some product but have not made a decision yet, if they see huge advertisements beside the road at that time, they might buy it immediately.

However, some people believe that businessmen are trying to brainwash people into buying something, even if people actually don’t need it. Nowadays, advertisements do not introduce their products to you; they just want you to spend money on them. In order to earn your money, there are a lot of celebrities and content creators exhibiting the goods on their personal Instagram, TV shows, and so on. Customers might buy stuff they don’t need or even things that do not suit them. This behavior might lead to more pollution on this earth.

From my perspective, I agree that advertisements improve finance and boost buyers’ willingness. But people waste too much, which is a more important issue to focus on. I think we need to have a balance between these two sides. Otherwise, when the environment has serious pollution problems, the government will need to pay more than ten times the revenue from ads to solve these problems at that time. Therefore, I more strongly agree that companies should consider both aspects and not only focus on which way can make more money.
