In contemporary world, less and less children tend to enjoy reading books. From my perspective, this trend is caused mainly by children seeking short dopamine and spending lots of hours using screens, so to tackle this problem parents or teachers should encourage them to read books by making it more interesting than other activities.
To begin with, as the technology is getting advanced, there are so many various social media softwares or mobile games on smartphones, making children to seek for short-time dopamine. Therefore, they can get addicted by spending too much time scrolling and wasting their free time, which may result in poor academic performances and lower cognitive abilities. For instance, if a child spend the majority of his free time on scrolling and screens, it is highly likely him not being able to read even 5 pages of a book, affecting child’s cognitive abilities, such as weaker critical thinking, shorter attention span, and weaker working memory.
To address this pressing issue, parents and educators should take deliberate steps to reshape how children perceive and interact with reading books. Organizing reading challenges, rewards, or book clubs where children can discuss stories together or gamifing the reading process can make students get more interested in reading books. In addition, it is highly important for teachers to update their curriculums, including more modern and gripping young adult literature rather than just dry classics, or allow students to books that matches their persnal interests. Taking this kind oc measures can be affective to tackle this problem.
In conclusion, the decline in reading among students is primarly driven by excessive screen time, causing lots of concerning issues and lowering their cognitive skills. Therefore, proactive measures by adults are essential to restore a love for books.
