It is widely argued that the importance of assigning homework to children by their teacher, which was controversial with many people claiming that it is unnecessary while other people are of the opinion that homework has an important role to play. This essay discusses both views of the argument and then I will give my own perspective on the matter
On one side of the argument, there are plenty of people who claim that the merits of giving homework to school children considerably outweigh the unnecessary. The main reason for believing this is that homework helps students to review the lessons that they learned at school. This is because of the limited time at school, children rarely adapt lesson’s theories to solve all the sections of the homework. Therefore, giving homework is essential for students to understand more clearly about the lessons and when they have a difficult assignment, they have ideas to solve this one more easily. Another benefit of setting homework is that it encourages independent learning. The reason for this is that they are challenged to work through tasks alone and at their own pace, which can lead to succeeding when they are adults. As a result, they can learn to be self-dependent and creative to solve problems effectively.
On the other hand, it is also possible to make an opposing case. It is argued that homework affects students’ health. This is because children have a range of extra classes after class time and they have to do homework which is given by their teachers at home, which could lead to a lack of sleeping time. Consequently, students easily suffer from health problems such as headaches and a lack of energy to concentrate on the lessons at school, which have a serious influence on their academic performance. Not only this but homework seems to have little impact on educational outcomes. This can be seen in Finland where school children are not given homework, but this country regularly tops international educational league tables and outperforms nations. As a consequence, homework is considerably unnecessary for children in their physical and mental development age.
In conclusion, I believe both arguments have their merits. On balance, I tend to believe that setting homework to school children by their teacher is more beneficial than unnecessary. This is because the merits of them helping students to review the lessons which they studied at school and encouraging independent learning outweigh the side effects of homework.
