It is widely debated whether academic homework should be eliminated so that young students can take up time for other meaningful activities, or it should be assigned to them. My perspective, however, aligns with the belief that home tasks are inseparable parts of students’ academic and mental development.
It is undeniable that homework is a useful tool for teachers to evaluate the student’s individual performance outside the classroom. It may help them to comprehend to what extent students understood the knowledge during the lessons, so that they can find more suitable and effective educational training methods for kids. To elaborate, tasks that students do at home directly reflect their academic performance, their strengths and weaknesses, which are the basis for teachers to prepare training plans for the following lessons.
However boring the homework is, some communities assert that it plays an integral role in the education of children as a method to encourage independent study. By doing home-based assignments, learners can review the lesson, enhancing their overall understanding. Additionally, homework also improves learners’ memory because they are required to answer questions based on the materials learned during school hours. For example, even a small English assignment can help a student to memorize new vocabularies and structures, thus leading to better performance at school in the long term. Apart from that, activities assigned to students can help them to freely develop necessary soft skills, such as time management, problem solving, self-learning and creative thinking, which is significantly beneficial for their future academics, as well as professional lives.
In conclusion, despite a wide range of controversial debates on the necessity of assigning homework for students, home-based assignment is still essential because it helps to develop the students’ academic knowledge as well as other necessary skills. To maximize its effectiveness, it is recommended that assignments should be in various forms and based on students’ factual abilities to avoid boredom among them while making the lessons deeply soaked into their bones.
