Nowadays, social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, especially among young people and teenagers. It provides many advantages, such as connectivity with the world and access to information quickly; however, it also has a negative impact onmental health. I strongly believe that social media can have many negative impacts on our mental health. It can affect our self-esteem, increase anxiety levels, and create feelings ofisolation and cyberbullying.
One of the main issues with social media is that it promotes many unrealistic standards that are difficult for anyone to achieve in life. Instagram and Facebook, which are known as social platforms, are full of edited photos and reels that highlight only the perfect parts. These seemingly perfect images misrepresent the reality of life and make it easy to compare our lives with them. Most people, especially teenagers, can experience low self-esteem through such comparisons. Research has shown that seeing these unrealistic perfect lives of other people can make them unhappy with their own lives, and dissatisfaction with their looks can lead to depression. For example, mostyoung users of social media felt unhappy about their ordinary lives after seeing and spending time on these platforms.
There is also another problem: anxiety and stress caused by using social media. People who focus on likes and notifications from others can start to feel pressured and fear missing out on updated information on social media, as it can release dopamine, similar to other addictive substances. Addiction to social media can lead to overuse of theseplatforms and reduced time spent in the real world. Spending time in the real world is more essential for building strong relationships with our families and reducing stress. Online interaction can weaken relationships among friends or family as they neglect quality time with them. They can start to feel loneliness from spending too much time scrolling through social media feeds.
The percentage of teenage girls facing cyberbullying on social media is higher than that of boys. Since they use social media for many hours to share their daily lives and personal experiences through photos and videos, they become vulnerable to havingtheir sensitive information accessed by cybercriminals and attackers. Cyberbullying can increase the risks of suicidal thoughts and depression.
In conclusion, even though social media has advantages, its negative impact on mental health is hard to ignore. It presents unrealistic images that lower users’ self-esteem and increase anxiety, especially for young people. Cyberbullying is also something we should consider, as it can negatively affect our mental health and cause depression. We should use social media wisely and mindfully to gain its advantages by connecting with the world without harming our mental health. Balancing real-world connections and social life is key to ensuring that social media remains a positive influence in our lives.
