There is ongoing debate about whether social networking sites bring considerable benefits or harmful effects to the community. While both perspectives have merit,I strongly believe that the negative impacts of social media significantly outweigh its benefits.
On the one hand, social media enables people to communicate instantly regardless of geographical distance. It allows individuals to maintain relationships with families, friends, and colleagues, even when they live in different countries. For example, international students can stay in touch with their families through platforms such as WhatsApp,Telegram, and Instagram. Therefore, social media strengthens social connections and reduces the feeling of isolation.
On the other hand, excessive use of social media can negatively affect people’s productivity. Many users spend hours scrolling through content instead of focusing on work, study, or other important responsibilities. For instance, some students spend several hours daily on Instagram, which leaves them less time for homework or revision.Consequently, social media addiction can hinder personal development by reducing productivity and focus.
In conclusion, despite the strengths of both perspectives,I firmly believe that social media has an overall detrimental impact on society. Not only does it encourage excessive screen time and addiction, but it also reduces people’s productivity in their daily lives.
