It is an uncommon opinion that gap year should be taken after young adults finish school. Many parents rush their children to choose a future and pursue a career fairly early in their identity development, which may lead to regretting their choices. In my opinion, high-school graduates should take a break before starting important studies or career.
Firstly, studies have been done that prove how gap year influences students academic performance after returning from a break. As far as I remember, there was an article about this topic, that proves how students perform much better in institutes, after having a gap year. The time off allows students to recharge and gather motivation to pursue a degree.
Secondly, taking a gap year is a great chance to gain experience and confidence for your future. Since many students are pressured to work towards academic degrees and a career, when they rarely had time during school to find out what to specialize in. Having a break could be a moment in their lives to take time and explore interests through internships, volunteering and many more activities that young adults can sign up in.
Lastly, gap year is an opportunity to start testing and gaining wisdom for adult life. Balancing student life and new adult responsibilities can be quite harsh on high-school graduates. Especially, when the majority leave their homes right after graduation, to live alone near institute campus. They have to take time to learn mature life basics, for example saving money, living alone and learning how to provide for yourself.
Overall, gap year would bring more benefits to young adults than disadvantages. This would provide them a gentle transition into independent adults to go after their passions.
