It is believed by some that a gap year can be beneficial for students’ life experience because it can help to build important skills and broaden their horizons, whereas others are convinced that it can harm academic performance due to the possible wastage of a large amount of time and difficulties in transitioning back to education. I believe that a gap year has more positive effects on students’ futures.
Some people tend to think that taking a gap year is crucial in gaining valuable life experiences. Firstly, it can help to develop several skills in terms of adaptability. Many take a gap year to travel and to explore themselves deeply if they have struggled before. Adaptability is a significant skill in life’s long journey. Secondly, traveling can help a person to expand their horizons by experiencing various places and other cultures. This is especially beneficial when a student will study abroad so that they can adapt effectively.
However, there are others who believe that such a long break from academics is simply a waste of time. Students can be left behind by their peers who have already decided to continue studying immediately. They can also miss opportunities and it can even lead to degradation if students neglect their time. In addition, there is a risk of their reconsidering continuing their studies. By this, they may choose a job over education, which can affect the student’s future significantly.
To conclude, despite the opinions about drawbacks of the gap year, I support those who believe that this break is essential for enhancing important life skills and expanding horizons.
