It has been argued that the government should take care of elderly people and provide them with financial support after they retire. There is no doubt that this assertion is based on valid assumptions and concrete observations, yet it is still bound to trigger debate. In the following essay, I will cover both views and give my opinion, as I firmly believe that although the government should provide basic support, individuals should also save money during their working years.
To begin, the most important argument to mention at this level of analysis is related to the fact that the government has a responsibility to support elderly people who are unable to work. There are many examples that can be cited here, and the clearest one is the case of retired people who have low incomes and cannot afford essential expenses such as food, housing and healthcare.
Additionally, another point to mention is the fact that government financial support can help old people live with dignity and reduce poverty. For instance, this is proven through the case of elderly people who receive a regular pension and can use it to pay for their basic needs without depending completely on their families.
To establish balance, one has to address the counterview as well. Indeed, one cannot overlook the opposite views put forth by those who do not agree with this statement. As a matter of fact, it has been claimed that individuals should save money during their working years because they are responsible for their own financial future. To go beyond abstraction, one can bring the example of a worker who regularly saves part of their salary and is therefore able to enjoy a comfortable retirement without relying entirely on government assistance, which seems to confirm what has been said earlier.
To conclude, this subject matter remains open to discussion, as ideas generally vary according to personal convictions and perspectives. However, I have to say that the best solution is for both the government and individuals to share the responsibility, with the government providing basic support and workers saving for their own retirement.
