Band 9: Some people believe that traditions hinder progress and should be abandoned in modern societies. Others argue that traditions provide essential identity and continuity. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

The tension between safeguarding longstanding cultural traditions and embracing progressive ethical standards has sparked intense debate in modern society. While proponents of cultural preservation argue that traditions are essential for identity and social cohesion, others contend that customary practices must adapt when they infringe upon basic human rights such as gender equality. In my opinion, while cultural heritage carries immense value, dynamic ethical principles must ultimately take precedence over practices that promote discrimination or harm.

On the one hand, advocates for traditional preservation emphasize the role of heritage in maintaining community identity and historical continuity. Cultural customs, passed down through generations, offer individuals a sense of belonging and rootedness in an increasingly homogenized, globalized world. Furthermore, many argue that external attempts to modify local traditions represent a form of cultural imperialism, undermining the autonomy of native societies. From this perspective, discarding centuries-old norms in favor of rapidly changing modern values risks eroding social stability and alienating communities from their ancestral roots.

On the other hand, the argument for reform rests on the premise that culture is not a static relic, but a living, evolving construct. Human societies continuously refine their moral compass, and practices that were once considered acceptable – such as restricting women’s access to education, leadership, or bodily autonomy – are now recognized as fundamentally unjust. When traditional practices conflict with universal human rights, defending them in the name of culture serves only to institutionalize inequality and oppression. Denying individuals equal rights under the guise of heritage fails to acknowledge that culture exists to serve humanity, not the other way around.

In conclusion, I believe that tradition and moral progress need not be mutually exclusive, but when a conflict arises, basic human dignity and gender equality must prevail. A healthy culture is one that preserves its artistic, linguistic, and ceremonial richness while actively shedding patriarchal or discriminatory elements. By allowing traditions to evolve, societies can honor their heritage without sacrificing the fundamental rights of all their membe
